WARNING
~~~~~~~
Use this program at your own risk. This program is guaranteed to
take up space on your hard drive, and nothing else.
What is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rumor Door enables you to keep a list of 10 one-line rumors, which
users can add to. These rumors will then be displayed at random
throughout your BBS. We tried to make the door as easy to customize
as possible, so you can achieve your own custom look and colors with
very little effort. (Saved you the trouble of Hex-editing it :)
Installation
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Setting up the door itself is very easy. Insert the following
command to your main menu (or wherever you want to put it):
1. Long descript : (R)umor Control
2. Short descript: (R)umors
3. Menu keys : R
4. ACS required : ""
5. Cmd keys : DD
6. Options : RUMORS.EXE
Flags : None
Q. Quit
Now copy the following files to your BBS subdirectory:
RUMORS.DAT - This file contains the actual rumors
RUMORS.CTL - Control file, MUST be present.
RUMORS.EXE - The door program.
RUMORCFG.EXE - Rumor.cfg file editor.
RUMORS.CFG - Where setup info is saved in ASCII text format.
RUMORTOP.ANS - 7 line ANSI file which displays at the top
of the door. Rumors also supports rotating
rumortop.ans's, following Renegade's .an1,
.an2, .an3, etc, naming convention.
Finally, you must edit your menus to tell Rumor Door WHEN to display
a rumor. The more work you put into this part, the better your
results will be. You will be inserting basically the same command
every place you want a rumor to show up. All you have to change is
the Menu key. The basic structure is as follows:
1. Long descript : (R)umor Control
2. Short descript: (R)umors
3. Menu keys : A
4. ACS required : ""
5. Cmd keys : -F
6. Options : RUMOR
Flags : (H)idden
Q. Quit
NOTE: It is VERY IMPORTANT that you type the word RUMOR as the
option, with no extension, and no S at the end. Duplicate it
exactly as it is above!
If you insert this command AFTER your (A)reas list command in your
FILE.MNU, a rumor will pop up every time someone does an (A)reas
listing. Again, how often the rumors show up is entirely
up to you. If you only want them to appear when someone changes
menus, insert a command as the first command, and make the Menu Keys
be 'FIRSTCMD'. Remember to change the Menu Keys to be exactly the
same as the command you want the rumor to follow or precede.
Some good places to put it are after the [ and ] commands, so that
every time these keys are used to change areas, a random rumor is
displayed. Another place might be after the (L)ist files command.
Use your imagination as to when you want these little suckers to
appear.
* With newer versions of Renegade, another good place to put rumors
is as a firstcmd in the GLOBAL menu.
Rumors.log
~~~~~~~~~~
Rumors creates a log file in the rumors directory, the filename is
rumors.log. This log file keeps track of who posted what rumor, and
the time and date it was posted. You can delete it at anytime, it
will rebuild itself.
Editing Rumors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If for some reason, a user enters a nasty rumor that you don't like,
you can first look in the log and see who the nasty user was. Then,
to edit the rumor, simply whip out your favorite text editor, and
edit the rumors.dat file. This file contains all the rumors in ascii
format. After you do that, add a new rumor in, save it, and the
offending rumor will be deleted.
Notes on rumortop.ans files
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technically, you can use the top 8 lines of the screen for your
ANSI, and the character positions 1-5 down the left hand side of the
screen. Any other place will be re-written by the door. Block copy
the top 7 lines and save them with NO screen clearing or cursor homing,
and a maximum line length of 75.
Registration
